What Bridget Jones taught me about dating | DATING SERIES

I have to say, Bridget Jones is my all time FAVOURITE film and book series.
There's something so hilarious about watching her down a humongous glass of wine, turning up to parties in either a hideous costume OR totally ruined makeup, and seeing her rock those huge granny pants that we all know and love. (and y'know, definitely own a pair... or ten.)

So this got me thinking...what has Bridget, this fictional but SO RELATABLE AND JUST GOD DAMN LOVABLE character, taught me about dating?

Obviously, to find out, I made a lovely hot chocolate (with probably waaay too much squirty cream) and grabbed a hand full of chocolate digestives to settle down and watch the first movie in bed.

And here is what I learnt.

1) Date none of the following...
"alcoholics, workaholics, commitment phobics, peeping toms, megalomaniacs, emotional fuckwits, or pervets." Words said by the very gal herself.

2)You can be single for THIRTY TWO YEARS (like Bridget) but still look fabulous, have an awesome job and still get men like Mark Darcy to fall head over heels in love with you.

3) Friends can spend most of their time "crying in the bathroom over fuckwit boyfriend."
Ouch to that.
So if you're single, just remember...there's ALWAYS something to be grateful for.

4) Choose granny suck-me-in pants over thongs, EVERY GOD DAMN TIME.
 Oh, comfort. Oh you.

5) Also, choose vodka every time.
Just like Bridget does.

6) It's totally okay to cry over someone you dated, and get super drunk by yourself.
And sing and dance around your room like nobody is watching. In fact, nobody IS watching. So you go gurl.

7) The most dreaded question by all singletons OR people casually dating is....
"So, how's your love life?"
DOH.
But remember...Bridget always replies with...."It's super."
So we will reply saying the same...right?
(Even if you just spent the previous ten minutes crying in the bathroom over the fact that the guy you met in the club last night hasn't texted you back.)

8) It's NORMAL to have not settled down or have your whole life together by your thirties.
So there's no panic for me at all.
 Yay.

9) Bridget also taught me that YOU DON'T HAVE TO CALORIE COUNT FOR SOMEONE TO LIKE YOU.
People can like you just the way you are.

10) "“It is proved by surveys that happiness does not come from love, wealth, or power but the pursuit of attainable goals.”
YES JONES. YES YES YES.
100% truth.

So even though Bridget is clumsy, awkward, and just all round a bit of an embarrassment, she actually taught me that these characteristics are ENDEARING. People like it.
BE YOU. DO YOU. AND EVERYONE WILL LOVE YOU.

  1. Claire I bloody love this series, this post was so uplifting! I definitely think that good old Bridget teaches us that being your clumsy, awkward, accident-prone self is absolutely fine and that when the right man comes along, he'll love you despite all of that! Big love for the not-having-settled-down-in-your-thirties too, good things come to those who wait!
